This course equips non- clinical staff in general practice and specialist settings with the knowledge and confidence to recognise and respond to patients at risk of suicide. It covers risk factors, warning signs and practical strategies for managing suicidal patients both over the phone and in person.

Through structured guidance and real-world scenarios, participants will learn how to communicate effectively, assess risk, ensure patient safety and escalate care appropriately. The course also reinforces the importance of working within scope of practice, documentation and clinician wellbeing.

Learning outcome 1: Identify risk factors, warning signs and protective factors associated with suicide in patients presenting in general practice and specialist settings.

Learning outcome 2: Apply appropriate communication strategies to assess suicide risk and respond to patients expressing suicidal thoughts or distress.

Learning outcome 3: Implement safe management plans, including referral pathways, documentation and follow-up, in line with best practice guidelines.
